Which certification is required for the workplace?
According to WSIB a workplace that has 5 or less workers on the floor at one time required at least one of those workers to have a valid Emergency First Aid certificate. This training course consists of 6.5 hours of training, with an assessment at the end.
A company that has 6 or more workers on the floor during a shift is required to have a worker with a valid Standard First Aid certificate. This training course consists of 13 hours of training, along with an assessment at the end of the course.
Having multiple employees trained in first aid is recommended for all companies. This is to ensure compliance when any worker who is trained in first aid is away from work due to illness or vacation.
Both Standard and Emergency first aid certifications are with the Canadian Red Cross and are valid for 3 years. A one day recertification is permitted once by the WSIB and must be completed by the expiry date noted on the card. Every six years, workers are required to complete the full two day Standard First Aid course again. This will ensure that participants keep their skills and knowledge up to date and are able to remember what to do in the event of a real-life emergency.
WSIB and Health and Safety regulations require that all Ontario employers provide a safe workplace for its employees. This means, in accordance with Workers Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) and federal Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation, employees know safe practices on the job, receive training to recognize potential hazards and how to safely use, handle, store, and dispose of hazardous substances. Employees must also be taught how to handle emergencies on the job. This latter requirement falls under First Aid training for the workplace.
Whether you’re in the construction industry, retail, manufacturing, electrical trade, or oil and gas sector, safety training is mandatory.
Safety training is instruction with site-specific information and occupation-specific procedures addressing worker safety. Training is an important part of understanding the hazards that may be present at a workplace, and preventing injuries on the job.
SOS First Aid and Safety Training can help employers meet industry requirements. Virtually hundreds of e-learning safety courses are offered through the SOS portal. Please visit https://sosfirstaid.ca/online-safety-training/ to view the online online training library.
