BLS for Healthcare Providers Certification Training (Formerly HCP)
Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR and AED Program
The Canadian Red Cross has replaced the Healthcare Provider (HCP) level of CPR with the new Basic Life Support (BLS) program. Responders who previously required CPR-HCP certification will now require CPR-BLS certification.
The updated BLS & AED program (formerly HCP) incorporates the latest evidence-based guidelines and meets current industry standards and legislative requirements.
This certification course covers CPR and choking management for adults, children, and infants using BLS-level protocols. Participants will also receive Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training and certification as part of the course.
As a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner, SOS First Aid delivers First Aid and CPR training through certified Red Cross instructors.
Training is available at convenient locations across Southern Ontario, including Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, and Brampton.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive:

What You’ll Learn
- Adult/Child/Baby – One-Rescuer CPR: Learn how to perform CPR independently for adults, children, and infants using current Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques.
- Adult/Child/Baby – Two-Rescuer CPR: Practice coordinated CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants when responding as part of a two-person team.
- Adult/Child/Baby Choking: Recognize and respond to choking emergencies across all age groups using appropriate intervention techniques.
- Use of a Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM): Develop practical skills in using a Bag-Valve-Mask device to support breathing during emergency response situations.
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED): Learn how to safely and effectively operate an AED as part of a cardiac emergency response.
- Working in a Team Healthcare Environment: Apply CPR and emergency response techniques within a team setting, focusing on coordination and effective communication.
Training & Certification
The BLS CPR and AED course is completed in approximately 4–6 hours, with 100% attendance required.
Certification is valid for 1 year. Participants must recertify prior to expiry to remain current.

This course is intended for healthcare providers and responders who deliver care in pre-hospital or in-facility environments.
