The Burlington Standard First Aid with Basic Life Support (formerly HCP) and AED course is designed for healthcare providers and first responders who need reliable certification and real-world readiness.

This course integrates Standard First Aid, Basic Life Support (BLS), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training in alignment with current Canadian Red Cross guidelines. Through hands-on skill development, instructor-led scenarios, and team-based simulations, participants strengthen their ability to respond confidently to medical and trauma emergencies.

What You’ll Learn

  • Primary Assessment: Quickly evaluate scene safety, responsiveness, airway, breathing, and circulation to identify life-threatening conditions and determine next steps.
  • High-Quality & High-Performance CPR: Perform effective chest compressions and assisted ventilations for adults, children, and infants using both one-rescuer and multi-rescuer techniques.
  • Secondary Assessment & Vital Sign Checks: Conduct a complete head-to-toe assessment and collect vital signs to guide ongoing care and treatment priorities.
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED): Integrate AED use into the cardiac arrest response sequence and support safe, efficient shock delivery.
  • Airway Management: Respond to choking and other airway obstructions across all age groups using evidence-based techniques.
  • Assisted Ventilation & Bag-Valve-Mask (BVM) Use: Provide assisted ventilations and apply BVM equipment appropriately when advanced airway support is required.
  • Trauma Response: Manage traumatic injuries such as severe bleeding, burns, fractures, and suspected head or spinal trauma until advanced care arrives.
  • Teamwork & Coordination: Work effectively with other responders and medical personnel to deliver organized, efficient emergency care.
  • Glove Removal & Infection Control: Safely remove gloves and follow proper PPE and infection-control procedures to reduce risk in clinical and prehospital settings.
  • Special Considerations in BLS: Apply adjustments and precautions for unique patient populations and complex emergency scenarios.
  • Additional Topics: Some courses may also include suspected opioid overdose response and key legal or ethical considerations for professional responders.

Training & Certification

This in-person, instructor-led course is delivered over approximately 14–16 hours across two days. Participants earn a Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid with CPR BLS/AED certificate, with BLS certification valid for one year and full certification valid for three years.

The program meets CSA standards for professional responders and is delivered at a convenient Burlington location. Making it easy for local healthcare workers and emergency personnel to maintain or renew their credentials without unnecessary travel.
