With the spring season now in full swing, many young people are considering where to work this summer. Students all over Southern Ontario are preparing for summer employment as they round out their school years. However, it’s important that they keep something in mind. First aid training is often a requirement for a summer job.
Are you thinking about applying to be a camp counsellor? Do you want to be a restaurant server? How about working on a golf course? No matter the job position, your employer will be prioritizing such safety skills as CPR and basic first aid.
Summer camps across Ontario are bustling hubs of activity.
If you’re interested in becoming a summer camp counsellor, you’re well aware that you’ll be working with kids. It will be part of your responsibility to assist campers with such activities as swimming, hiking, canoeing and participating in games. With so much going on, accidents are bound to happen.
Everything from crapes and sprains to allergic reactions and even drowning incidents are possible. Ontario Camps Association makes clear that First Aid/CPR and AED Certification are requirements for all camp counsellors.
Numerous mishaps can happen in restaurants.
Being a restaurant server means a lot more than taking meal orders and delivering food to tables. Restaurants are places where kitchen burns, choking hazards and slips on wet floors can take place. Are you prepared to address such mishaps effectively? As per the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), all businesses covered by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) must follow the first aid requirements in the First Aid Regulations.
Therefore, restaurant owners generally require at least one staff member per shift to be certified in CPR and basic first aid. This is especially true for individuals in management or supervisory roles. For student hires, this often means getting certified before day one.
Golf courses come with unique safety concerns.
You may assume that golf is a slow-paced game that is easily manageable for older players. Nevertheless, golf courses are known for being the homes of such health issues as heat stroke, insect bites, sprains and cardiac emergencies. Remember that grounds crews, beverage cart attendants and pro shop employees often work outdoors. They also work in isolated areas of the course. It’s vital such workers are trained to handle medical emergencies.
Because of this, many Ontario-based golf courses require staff to have current First Aid & CPR training. The Seguin Valley Golf Club, for example, also requires their employees to complete Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMIS) training on an annual basis.
Get certified before you apply for your summer job.
Many student summer jobs fall under categories where employers are expected to meet workplace safety standards. This includes having employees with WSIB-approved first aid certification. Employers look for youth who are already trained because it reduces onboarding time and ensures immediate coverage for emergencies. It also aligns with provincial health and safety regulations.
Whether you’re a student in Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington or Hamilton, you can get ahead by earning your WSIB-approved and Red Cross First Aid with CPR and AED certification with SOS First Aid. We offer courses that meet all workplace standards. They are led by Red Cross-certified instructors in a clean, welcoming environment.
