Did You Know? AEDs Are Now Required on Ontario Construction Sites

As of January 1, 2026, the Ontario government has introduced a major safety update for construction projects. Under the newly published regulation, O. Reg. 157/25: Construction Projects, construction sites that meet certain criteria must now have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on-site.

This regulation applies specifically to projects where:

  • There are 20 or more workers employed at the site.

The amendment to Ontario Regulation 213/91 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) establishes clear guidelines for AED installation, maintenance, and accessibility.

Key Requirements for AEDs on Construction Sites

  1. Defibrillator Licensing
The AED must be licensed as a medical device by Health Canada, ensuring it meets safety and quality standards.
  2. Required Accompanying Items
To support emergency response, the AED must be stored with:

    • One CPR mask
    • One pair of scissors
    • Two pairs of disposable medical-grade gloves
    • One disposable razor
    • One garbage bag
    • Four absorbent towels
  3. Storage Guidelines
The AED and its accessories must be kept in a suitable location that:

    • Keeps all items together
    • Protects them from dust, moisture, and damage
    • Is clearly labeled with a sign showing a heart with a lightning bolt and the words “Automated External Defibrillator (AED)” in English or “Défibrillateur externe automatisé (DEA)” in French
    • Is unobstructed for easy access
    • Provides protection from extreme weather if outdoors

  4. Inspection and Maintenance
    • The AED must be maintained and tested according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
    • A competent worker must inspect it quarterly, with records of inspections kept on-site including dates and signatures.
  5. Trained Personnel
At all times when work is in progress, a worker trained in CPR and AED use must be present.

Why This Matters

Construction sites are inherently high-risk environments. Sudden cardiac arrest can occur without warning, and having an AED on-site can significantly increase survival chances. By mandating AEDs on larger, long-term construction projects, the Ontario government is taking a proactive step to protect workers’ health and safety.

For constructors and site managers, it’s crucial to plan ahead: ensure your site is equipped, your AED is maintained, and trained personnel are available.  At SOS First Aid, we’re here to make sure you and your team feel confident and prepared on the construction site. We provide CPR and First Aid training that meets the requirements for construction projects, including the proper use of AEDs.

This training isn’t optional it’s mandated for sites where AEDs are required. By having your staff complete our courses, you ensure they are ready to respond quickly and effectively if an accident or medical emergency occurs. Register today
